Chapter XII
The parents, as well as her brother and sister siblings, were all at the funeral home for the closed-casket funeral services for Sara Longstreet on Thursday. June introduced herself to them at the visitation preceding the actual service. Herb Cole was there with June to meet the family and represent the company. He expressed his sorrow for the tragedy to the family. He told them what a wonderful and faithful employee she had been. June saw that Saraâs parents and brother were totally devastated from their loss.
After the burial service at the cemetery, Saraâs brother, Chuck Longstreet, told June that he told his sister he was ready to come to Peoria and take care of the problem with Tony, but Sara threatened that she would never have anything to do with him again if he came to intercede. âLike a damn fool, I let Sara talk me out of it; now Iâm sorry I did. But if the police donât get him, I will,â he said.
June told him, âThe police will get whoever did this horrible thing to Sara, I am sure of it. Detective Carson told me they would get the person responsible for her death, and I believe him. I think we all need to let the detective do his job.â
Georgia Gibson approached June as the two were leaving. Her eyes were still dripping tears. âJune, I know how close you and Sara were. She told me you were the best friend she had ever had, so I know how hard this has to be for you.â
âIt is, Georgia, but the worst part is that I feel so helpless over it. I feel if the police find the person responsible, maybe I can start to heal, but from what Iâm told, they donât have any solid clues to go on yet. I know they say Tony Galante is a person of interest, but heâs skipped out and they havenât found him yet,â June said, crying again. âShe hasnât seen any other man than Tony that I know of, at least not lately.â
âShe did see another man, the same night that she was killed, but Iâm hesitant to say who he was because I donât want to bring any suspicion his way. I know him and I know him to be a wonderful man,â Georgia said. âHe is a man I have known for quite a few years. He took Sara to dinner and to the theater because I introduced them to each other.â
âYou mean it is a man the police donât know about?â June asked.
âYes, but it couldnât possibly be him. I donât want to bring him into it when I know he could never harm a flea,â Georgia told her. âHe has had too many problems after the death of his devoted wife to get him involved with this mess.â
âBut Georgia, the police should at least be able to question him. He could hold a clue that could help them solve the case. Will you tell
